About Air Filters
Air filters keep dirt out of the engine and set the baseline for how it breathes. This page lists replacement filter elements and air cleaner components for Harley-Davidson and Indian models.
What is listed
K&N leads, with high flow elements such as HD-0900 for Sportster, HD-1499 for Touring and Softail, E-3226 for V-twin, and chrome-topped crankcase vent filters. Harddrive offers pleated cotton media filters for Touring, Softail and Dyna Twin Cam, and elements for S&S E and G round air cleaners. Pro One sells smooth air cleaner covers in black anodized for 1984 to 1999 Evolution Big Twins, Old Stf lists Mini ED air cleaners in polished and tumbled finishes, and Rocket Performance Garage has a performance air cleaner kit for Milwaukee-Eight.
Choosing a filter
Match the filter to the air cleaner housing and model year. Washable cotton elements can be cleaned and re-oiled with a service kit, which cuts cost over time, while paper elements are simply replaced. Inspect the element for tears whenever you service it. A freer-flowing filter changes airflow, so a fuel-injected bike generally needs a tune afterward. Keep the sealing surface between the filter and its backplate clean, since leaks there let unfiltered air past the element. Free-flowing filters are intended for off-road and closed-course use only.
