About Security
Locks are an inexpensive way to discourage theft, and this page covers the main types: disc locks, chain and U-lock combinations, cable locks, straps and alarm locks. No lock can make a bike theft-proof, but a combination of visible deterrents and anchoring makes any bike a harder target.
Lock types and brands
ABUS lists Granit disc locks, including alarm versions like the 8008 3D, the Granit Power Chain in 120 cm and the Travelguard strap lock. Kryptonite offers Evolution Series 4 disc locks, Kryptolok Series 2 locks, and the New York Chain and Noose with a disc lock. Onguard lists the Beast 8016L chain and U-lock combination at 6 feet and the Terrier 8061 combo cable lock at 4 feet. Xena adds alarmed disc locks, and Dead Bolt rounds out the list.
Choosing a lock
Match the lock to where you park. A disc lock is quick and small enough to carry, while a chain adds an anchor point so the bike cannot be wheeled away. Look at pin diameter, chain thickness and the lock's reach through your wheel. Alarm locks add a sound deterrent. Keep an extra key somewhere safe and lubricate the mechanism once in a while.
