About Switches
Switches fail from heat, vibration and age, and a bad one can leave a rider with a no-start, dead lights or a flashing warning. This page lists replacements and upgrades for Harley-Davidson and Indian electrical controls.
Switch types
Harddrive lists chrome and black handlebar switch kits and assemblies for Touring, Softail and Dyna, ignition switch housings for Touring 2003 to 2006, and mini push button switches in chrome. SMP lists neutral safety switches for Sportster XL 2003 to 2019 and universal V-twin fitments, plus relay switches, plug-style starter relay switches and vacuum operated switch kits. Grote adds a toggle lever style 15 amp switch, and NAMZ and JAGG provide specialty items.
Fitment tips
Match the switch to your year and ignition style. Handlebar switches differ between cable and throttle-by-wire bikes, and some years use different connectors. Neutral safety switches are position and thread specific, and relays must match the circuit. Use dielectric grease on electrical connectors, and disconnect the battery before swapping any switch. Test the new part with the key on before you reassemble the housing, and route wires so they cannot be pinched when the bars turn lock to lock. If a switch keeps failing, look for water getting into the housing or a chafed wire further back.
For accessories on the same circuits, see the electrical page, and for matching controls see hand controls.
