About Forks

This page is narrower than the main suspension pages, and it focuses on fork components: replacement tubes and bushing sets for Harley-Davidson and Indian front ends. For shocks, springs and cartridge kits, see the broader suspension and forks page.

Tubes and bushings

Pro One has the largest list, with fork tubes in 39 mm, 41 mm and 49 mm diameters, in lengths such as 20 1/4, 22 7/8, 24 7/8, 25 1/2 and 26 1/4 inches, and finishes including chrome, Gold TIN and Black DLC. Harddrive lists hard chrome fork tubes, including 20.875 inch and 24.875 inch versions for Touring, and 41 mm and 49 mm fork bushing sets.

Fitment and installation

Fork tube diameter and length depend on the model and year. A 49 mm tube from a Dyna is not the same as a 41 mm tube from an older Touring. Measure your current tubes before ordering and check the fitment line. New tubes need new seals, bushings and fresh oil, and the work includes bleeding the system properly. Gold TIN and Black DLC coatings reduce wear and look different from chrome, so choose based on how you ride.

See gaskets and seals for fork seal kits, and hardware for the small parts.

Forks FAQ

How do I know my fork tube diameter?
Measure the visible tube or check your manual. Common Harley sizes are 39 mm, 41 mm and 49 mm.
What are Gold TIN and Black DLC?
Hard coatings applied to fork tubes to resist wear. Gold TIN is a gold-colored titanium nitride coating and Black DLC is a black diamond-like carbon coating.
Do I need new seals with new tubes?
Yes. New tubes call for new seals and usually new bushings.
What lengths are listed?
Lengths range from about 20 to 26 inches. Match your original length unless you plan to change ride height.
Do forks fit Indian bikes?
Some listings are for Harley and Indian V-twin. Check the title.
