About Chains

A chain is a wear item, and for chain-driven V-twins the right one makes the difference in life and noise. This page lists 530 pitch chains and master links from EK, Fire Power and Vortex, in sealed and non-sealed types.

Chain types

EK lists MVXZ2 Series X-Ring chains in 530 with 120 links, 3D QX2 X-Ring chrome chains and DRZ-2 non-sealed drag race chains in 150 and 170 links, plus clip and rivet master links. Fire Power offers O-ring sealed chains in 130 links and a 100 foot roll in 530 pitch, along with heavy duty clip master links and gold rivet-style and clip-style master links. Vortex lists the RX3 X-Ring chain at 114 links in black.

Selecting a chain

Chain pitch, 530 here, and link count must match your sprockets and swingarm length. Sealed chains hold lubricant between the pins and last longer in everyday riding. Non-sealed chains are lighter and meant for racing, where chains are replaced often. Master links join the chain, and a rivet link is more secure than a clip link. Always cut the chain to length carefully, and lubricate it on a schedule.

For the sprocket side of the system, see sprockets and the drive parts page. Non-sealed drag race chains are intended for off-road and race use only.

Chains FAQ

What does 530 mean?
It is the chain pitch and width designation. Your sprockets must be 530 to use these chains.
What is the difference between O-ring and X-ring?
Both are sealed. X-rings generally create less friction and are common on modern chains.
What is a master link?
It is the link that joins the chain's ends. Rivet-style links are more secure than clip-style.
How many links do I need?
It depends on your sprockets and swingarm. Compare to your current chain length.
Are non-sealed chains for everyday riding?
They are intended for racing and drag use, where they get replaced often.
