About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

The Progressive 412 Series Shocks are a proven upgrade for Harley-Davidson riders seeking improved suspension performance and reliability. These shocks feature a durable double-wall steel body and nitrogen-charged damping.

Why riders pick this

 • Improves ride quality and handling
 • Durable double-wall steel body
 • Nitrogen-charged for consistent damping
 • 5-position cam-style preload adjustment
 • Available in multiple spring rates and finishes

Designed to deliver consistent performance, the 412 Series offers a significant improvement over stock suspension, enhancing both ride quality and handling dynamics. Their accessible price point makes them a popular choice for riders looking to elevate their V-twin experience.

Reliable Damping and Custom Tuning

 • Durable double-wall steel damper body construction
 • High-pressure nitrogen gas charged for consistent performance

Enhance Your Ride

These shocks are an excellent foundation for any suspension upgrade, offering adjustability to match your weight and riding style. Whether you're cruising solo or loaded down with gear, the 412 Series helps maintain composure and comfort. Pair them with a Progressive front end kit for a fully balanced suspension system. Always confirm fitment for your specific Harley-Davidson model before ordering.

Common questions

Can I adjust the stiffness or ride height after installation?

Yes, the 5-position cam-style preload adjuster allows you to easily dial in the stiffness to match your weight and riding style without special tools. Ride height is determined by the shock length you choose.

Are these shocks compatible with my Harley-Davidson?

Progressive 412 Series shocks are available for many Harley-Davidson models. You'll need to confirm the correct shock length, mount configuration, and spring rate for your specific year and model using our Shop by Bike tool.

What's the benefit of nitrogen-charged damping?

Nitrogen gas charging helps prevent oil cavitation and foaming, ensuring more consistent and fade-free damping performance even during extended rides or spirited use.

Upgrade over OEM

My 2001 RK Classic was in bad need of new rear shocks. Old ones didn't hold air for more than a couple hours and I ride with momma on the back or loaded up for a long solo ride 90% of the time. Rarely do I ride solo without a load or the boss behind me. So after lots of searching I decided the 412s were what I needed since I will be buying a new bike next year. No need to spend a ton of money.

Package arrived quickly and after opening and giving the instructions a quick read I was after it. Got the bike on the jack bags off and lower shock bolts on each side out. Top bolts come out next and since I had everything off and out of the way I took time to check out everything and clean things up. Time for new shocks now. Pop in the spacers and put a little bit of blue LocTite on the threads (instructions didn't say it was needed but I feel better with some on there) place top bolts in first and thread them in a little bit. Place the bottom ones in next. You might have to adjust your jack to get the holes to line up but not a big deal. Everything lined up and tightened down (didn't have a torque wrench so I just went until I thought it was good) cleaned up and got the wrench they send with the shocks and I turned them up a click. Put bags on with some weight in them and went for a ride.

Noticed right away it was lowered down. Liked the look of it so I'm happy with that. Then after I got out and on the roads that used to jar the bike hard and went down them I noticed that it was a lot smoother. I was so happy with it and enjoy riding even more now

I know that the higher price shocks will ride much better than these but I'm incredibly happy with the improvement over the 16 year old air shocks that were on it.

So my advice is to have realistic expectations with them. If you are looking for an improvement over old worn out shocks these will do that but won't give you a Cadillac ride. They are under $300 so you have to expect improvement but not an mind blowing experience

Shocking

I have bought both high $ and low $ shocks and these work great for the $. Replace your stock air shocks in 10 minutes and off you go... I would buy them again.

Best bang for the buck!

These shocks provided the most radical change to the ride and handeling of my motorcycle. Suspension should be on your upgrade list and these shocks should be your choice.

Much better

Bolted the shocks on in less than 20 minutes and took off on a 150 mile ride. Night and day difference from the stock air shocks.
