About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Progressive 412 Series shocks deliver smooth, consistent suspension performance with a durable double-wall steel damper body and nitrogen charge. These shocks are engineered to provide a noticeable improvement in ride quality over stock, allowing you to fine-tune your Harley-Davidson for varied loads and riding styles. The robust construction ensures long-lasting reliability on the road.

Why riders pick this

  • Smooth, consistent damping from a nitrogen-charged design
  • Durable double-wall steel damper construction
  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving for better road feel
  • Quick 5-position cam preload adjustment
  • Available with standard or heavy-duty progressive springs

Dial in your Harley-Davidson's suspension with the Progressive 412 Series shocks. Designed for riders who demand better control and comfort, these shocks feature a tough double-wall steel damper body and are nitrogen-charged for consistent performance. Whether you're cruising solo or loaded down for a long haul, the 412 Series helps absorb road imperfections without harsh feedback, giving you a more planted and enjoyable ride.

Adjustable Performance for Your Ride

  • Double-wall steel damper construction for enhanced durability
  • High-pressure nitrogen gas charge maintains consistent damping
  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive damping responds smoothly to varying road conditions
  • 5-position cam-style preload adjuster for quick ride tuning
  • Available with standard or heavy-duty progressive springs to match your load

Engineered for the Open Road

The Progressive 412 Series shocks are a direct upgrade for many Harley-Davidson models, offering a straightforward installation for most riders. The ability to quickly adjust preload means you can optimize your suspension for different rider weights or when carrying a passenger and gear. Pair these shocks with a quality front suspension upgrade for a truly balanced and high-performance V-twin chassis.

Common questions

Can I adjust the ride height or stiffness?

Yes, the 5-position cam-style preload adjuster allows you to easily dial in the firmness to match your weight and riding preferences.

Are these shocks a direct bolt-on replacement?

Progressive 412 Series shocks are designed as a direct replacement for many Harley-Davidson models. Please confirm fitment for your specific year and model using our Shop by Bike tool before ordering.

What's the benefit of nitrogen charging?

Nitrogen charging helps maintain consistent damping performance by preventing aeration of the shock oil, which can cause fade during extended use or aggressive riding.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
