About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

The Progressive 412 Series shocks are engineered to provide smooth, consistent damping, significantly improving the ride quality of your Harley-Davidson. Designed for durability and performance, these shocks enhance both comfort and control on the road.

Why riders pick this

  • Smooth, consistent damping for a better ride
  • Nitrogen-charged for reliable performance
  • Adjustable preload for rider weight and load
  • Choose from standard or heavy-duty spring rates
  • Available in chrome or black finish options

Featuring a robust double-wall steel body and nitrogen-charged, multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving, these 412 Series shocks deliver reliable performance. This advanced valving system ensures consistent damping response across a wide range of road conditions, from smooth highways to rougher backroads. Riders can choose between standard or heavy-duty progressive-rate springs, tailoring the suspension to their specific weight and riding style.

Customizable Comfort and Control

  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive damping for responsive handling
  • 5-position cam-style preload adjuster for quick adjustments
  • Available in standard or heavy-duty spring rates
  • Durable double-wall steel construction
  • Nitrogen-charged for fade-free performance

Built for the Road Ahead

The 412 Series shocks are a straightforward upgrade for any Harley-Davidson owner looking for better suspension. The convenient five-position cam-style preload adjuster allows you to easily dial in the perfect ride for your weight and whether you're riding solo or with a passenger. With options for chrome or black finish, these shocks not only perform great but also complement your bike's aesthetic.

Common questions

How do I adjust the preload on these shocks?

The Progressive 412 Series shocks feature a 5-position cam-style preload adjuster, allowing you to easily increase or decrease spring tension to match your weight and riding style.

What's the benefit of multi-stage valving?

Multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving provides consistent damping across a wider range of speeds and road conditions, resulting in a smoother, more controlled ride than basic shock designs.

Will these shocks change my bike's ride height?

While the 5-position preload adjuster allows for minor adjustments in sag and ride height based on load, the overall shock length determines the primary ride height. Confirm the specific length required for your model.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
