About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

The Progressive 412 Series shocks provide tunable suspension performance for a range of Harley-Davidson models, including Touring, Softail, and Dyna platforms. Engineered with a durable double-wall steel body and nitrogen-charged damping, these shocks enhance both comfort and control.

Why riders pick this

  • Tunable suspension for improved ride quality
  • Adjustable preload for solo or two-up riding
  • Multi-stage damping for consistent control
  • Durable double-wall steel construction
  • Available in progressive or heavy-duty spring rates

These 412 Series shocks feature multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving, which ensures consistent and responsive damping across varied road conditions. This advanced design helps keep your V-twin planted, whether you're navigating rough pavement or carving through corners. The result is a more confident and comfortable ride, reducing fatigue on long journeys and improving overall handling.

Customizable Comfort and Control

  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive damping for responsive performance
  • 5-position cam-style preload adjuster for rider weight and load
  • Durable double-wall steel damper construction
  • High-pressure nitrogen gas charged for consistent operation
  • Available with progressive or heavy-duty spring rates

Optimized for Your Harley

The ability to fine-tune your suspension is crucial, and the Progressive 412 Series delivers. The convenient 5-position cam-style preload adjuster allows you to quickly dial in the ideal ride height and stiffness, whether you're riding solo, with a passenger, or carrying extra gear. With options for both chrome and black finishes, these shocks not only perform exceptionally but also complement the style of your Harley-Davidson Touring, Softail, or Dyna.

Common questions

How do I adjust the preload on these shocks?

Use the 5-position cam-style adjuster on the shock body to increase or decrease spring preload. This allows you to fine-tune the ride for your weight, passenger, or luggage.

Will these shocks fit my specific Harley-Davidson model?

These shocks fit a range of Harley-Davidson Touring, Softail, and Dyna models. Always confirm your specific year and model using our Shop by Bike tool before ordering to ensure correct fitment.

What are the benefits of nitrogen-charged damping?

Nitrogen gas charging helps prevent cavitation and maintains consistent damping performance by keeping the oil under pressure, reducing fade during extended or aggressive riding.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
