About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Progressive 412 Series shocks provide smooth, consistent damping for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, making them a durable and adjustable suspension upgrade. Their nitrogen-charged, double-wall steel design ensures reliable performance mile after mile.

Why riders pick this

  • Consistent damping from nitrogen-charged design
  • Durable double-wall steel construction
  • Multi-stage valving for responsive handling
  • Quick 5-position preload adjustment
  • Upgrade for Harley-Davidson comfort and control

Enhance the handling and comfort of your Harley-Davidson with the Progressive 412 Series shocks. These shocks are built with a robust double-wall steel damper body and utilize a high-pressure nitrogen gas charge to deliver consistent, fade-free performance. The multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving adapts to changing road conditions, providing a controlled and comfortable ride.

Common questions

Can I adjust the preload myself?

Yes, the 5-position cam-style preload adjuster allows you to easily dial in the ride height and stiffness to match your weight and load without special tools.

What is the benefit of nitrogen-charged shocks?

Nitrogen charging helps prevent oil cavitation and foaming, ensuring consistent damping performance even during extended or aggressive riding.

Are these shocks a direct bolt-on replacement?

These shocks are designed as a direct replacement for many Harley-Davidson models. Always confirm specific fitment for your year and model using Shop by Bike before ordering.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
