About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Progressive 412 Series shocks deliver suspension tuning without the premium price tag. They feature durable double-wall steel construction with nitrogen-charged, multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving.

Why riders pick this

  • Durable double-wall steel construction
  • Nitrogen-charged for consistent damping
  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving
  • 5-position cam preload adjuster
  • Available in chrome or black finish

This design ensures smooth, consistent damping across the compression stroke, improving your Harley-Davidson's handling and comfort. A five-position cam-style preload adjuster lets you dial in spring stiffness to match your weight and riding style, ensuring a personalized ride.

Precision Damping and Rider-Focused Adjustability

  • Double-wall steel damper body for robust durability
  • Nitrogen-charged for consistent, fade-free performance
  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving for smooth damping
  • 5-position cam preload adjuster for quick tuning
  • Available with chrome or black finish options

Customize Your Harley's Feel

The Progressive 412 Series shocks are an excellent choice for riders seeking a noticeable upgrade in their Harley-Davidson's suspension. The easily adjustable preload means you can fine-tune your ride for different loads or preferences, from a solo cruise to a fully loaded tour. Always confirm your specific year and model using our Shop by Bike tool before ordering to ensure proper fitment.

Common questions

Can I adjust the ride height or stiffness?

Yes, the 5-position cam preload adjuster lets you dial spring stiffness to match your weight and riding style without needing special tools.

What does multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving mean?

This type of valving automatically adjusts damping resistance based on the speed of suspension travel, providing a smoother ride over small bumps and better control over larger impacts.

Will these shocks change the look of my bike?

These shocks are available in chrome or black finish options, allowing you to choose a look that complements your Harley-Davidson's aesthetics. Optional show chrome covers are also available on select models for an even more custom appearance.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
