Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.
Progressive 412 Series shocks deliver a smooth, consistent ride through double-wall steel construction and nitrogen-charged, multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving. A five-position cam-style preload adjuster lets you dial in compression for light or heavy riders, making these a versatile upgrade for Harley-Davidson suspension.
Why riders pick this

Common questions
Can I adjust the preload myself?

Will these shocks improve my ride quality over stock?
The Progressive 412 Series shocks are engineered to provide a significant improvement in ride quality and handling compared to most factory suspension setups, offering more consistent damping and adjustability.
How do I choose between standard and heavy-duty springs?
The choice between standard and heavy-duty springs depends on your typical riding weight. Heavy-duty springs are recommended for heavier riders, frequent two-up riding, or when carrying significant luggage. Confirm your specific model and year with Shop by Bike to ensure correct spring rate.

Stiff
The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
