About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Progressive 412 Series shocks deliver durable suspension performance for your Harley-Davidson, featuring a robust double-wall steel body and nitrogen-charged damping. With adjustable preload, these shocks can be tuned to suit any rider's weight and riding style. They are built for consistent handling and a smooth ride throughout the lifespan of your V-twin.

Why riders pick this

 • Durable double-wall steel body
 • Multistage velocity-sensitive damping
 • Nitrogen gas charged for consistent performance
 • Five-position cam-style preload adjustment

These Progressive 412 Series shocks in chrome are designed to not only enhance the look of your Harley-Davidson but also provide a significant upgrade in ride quality. Moving beyond the limitations of stock suspension, the 412 Series offers a more controlled and comfortable experience, absorbing road imperfections with greater efficiency and helping your V-twin maintain better traction.

Performance and Style

 • Double-wall steel damper body ensures long-lasting durability
 • Multistage velocity-sensitive damping valve provides superior road control
 • High-pressure nitrogen gas charging maintains consistent performance
 • Five-position cam-style preload adjuster for quick, tool-free adjustments

Tailored for Your Ride

The ability to quickly adjust preload means you can easily adapt your Harley-Davidson for solo cruising, two-up touring, or hauling gear. This user-friendly feature ensures that your V-twin performs optimally under various loads and riding scenarios, providing a more personalized and enjoyable experience every time you twist the throttle. The brilliant chrome finish adds a classic touch of custom style to your motorcycle.

Common questions

Can I adjust the preload myself?

Yes, the 5-position cam-style preload adjuster allows you to dial in stiffness without special tools. Rotate to match your rider weight and load.

What's the difference between Standard and Heavy-Duty springs?

Standard springs are suitable for most solo riders, while Heavy-Duty springs are recommended for heavier riders, frequent two-up riding, or when carrying significant luggage. Confirm fitment with Shop by Bike before ordering.

Will these shocks fit my specific Harley-Davidson model?

Progressive 412 Series shocks are available for many Harley-Davidson models. Please use the Shop by Bike feature on our website to confirm compatibility with your specific year and model before ordering.

Upgrade over OEM

My 2001 RK Classic was in bad need of new rear shocks. Old ones didn't hold air for more than a couple hours and I ride with momma on the back or loaded up for a long solo ride 90% of the time. Rarely do I ride solo without a load or the boss behind me. So after lots of searching I decided the 412s were what I needed since I will be buying a new bike next year. No need to spend a ton of money.

Package arrived quickly and after opening and giving the instructions a quick read I was after it. Got the bike on the jack bags off and lower shock bolts on each side out. Top bolts come out next and since I had everything off and out of the way I took time to check out everything and clean things up. Time for new shocks now. Pop in the spacers and put a little bit of blue LocTite on the threads (instructions didn't say it was needed but I feel better with some on there) place top bolts in first and thread them in a little bit. Place the bottom ones in next. You might have to adjust your jack to get the holes to line up but not a big deal. Everything lined up and tightened down (didn't have a torque wrench so I just went until I thought it was good) cleaned up and got the wrench they send with the shocks and I turned them up a click. Put bags on with some weight in them and went for a ride.

Noticed right away it was lowered down. Liked the look of it so I'm happy with that. Then after I got out and on the roads that used to jar the bike hard and went down them I noticed that it was a lot smoother. I was so happy with it and enjoy riding even more now

I know that the higher price shocks will ride much better than these but I'm incredibly happy with the improvement over the 16 year old air shocks that were on it.

So my advice is to have realistic expectations with them. If you are looking for an improvement over old worn out shocks these will do that but won't give you a Cadillac ride. They are under $300 so you have to expect improvement but not an mind blowing experience

Shocking

I have bought both high $ and low $ shocks and these work great for the $. Replace your stock air shocks in 10 minutes and off you go... I would buy them again.

Best bang for the buck!

These shocks provided the most radical change to the ride and handeling of my motorcycle. Suspension should be on your upgrade list and these shocks should be your choice.

Much better

Bolted the shocks on in less than 20 minutes and took off on a 150 mile ride. Night and day difference from the stock air shocks.

Progressive 412 shocks are a lot better ride than the original shocks on my 2003 ultra classic.
