About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Progressive 412 Series shocks deliver suspension tuning at an entry-level price point, offering a simple, durable design that improves ride quality over stock. The double-wall steel damper body with a nitrogen charge and multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving provides consistent damping. A five-position preload adjuster lets you dial in comfort for your weight and riding style.

Why riders pick this

  • Improved ride quality over stock suspension
  • Durable double-wall steel damper body
  • Nitrogen-charged for consistent damping
  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving
  • Five-position cam-style preload adjuster

For Harley-Davidson riders looking to step up their suspension game without breaking the bank, the Progressive 412 Series shocks are an excellent choice. These shocks are engineered to provide a noticeable improvement in comfort and control, making your daily commute or long-distance tour more enjoyable. The robust construction ensures they can stand up to the rigors of the road.

Reliable Performance for Your V-Twin

  • Durable double-wall steel damper construction
  • High-pressure nitrogen gas charge for consistent damping
  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive damping reacts to varying road conditions
  • Five-position cam-style preload adjuster for easy tuning
  • Available in standard or heavy-duty progressive spring options

Tune Your Ride with Ease

The ability to fine-tune your suspension is a key advantage of the 412 Series. The intuitive five-position preload adjuster makes it simple to adapt your bike's ride characteristics to your specific needs, whether you're riding solo, with a passenger, or loaded down with gear. This adjustability ensures that you get the most out of every mile on your Harley-Davidson.

Common questions

What is the preload adjuster and how do I use it?

The five-position cam-style preload adjuster allows you to compress the spring, increasing stiffness to accommodate different rider weights, passengers, or cargo. You typically use a spanner wrench to rotate the cam.

Are these shocks available in different finishes?

Yes, these shocks are available with either a chrome or black finish, allowing you to match your bike's aesthetic.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
