About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Unleash the full potential of your 1988-1999 Harley Softail with Progressive 422 shocks. Featuring a remote adjustable preload (RAP) system, these shocks allow you to fine-tune your suspension on the fly, adapting to changing loads or passenger weight without tools.

Why riders pick this

  • Remote Adjustable Preload (RAP) for tool-free tuning
  • High-pressure monotube design for consistent damping
  • Ride height adjustable from stock to 2 inches lower
  • Tailored for 1988-1999 Harley Softail models
  • Available in Standard and Heavy Duty spring rates

Designed with a high-pressure monotube, the Progressive 422 shocks deliver consistent, fade-free damping crucial for a confident ride on any road. The RAP system, conveniently mounted behind the left passenger peg, makes adjustments quick and effortless, ensuring optimal comfort and control whether you're solo or two-up.

Common questions

What is the RAP system and how does it benefit my ride?

The Remote Adjustable Preload (RAP) system is a dial adjuster located behind your left passenger peg. It allows you to quickly and easily adjust your shock's preload by hand, making it simple to compensate for a passenger or cargo without needing tools.

Can these shocks lower my Softail?

Yes, these Progressive 422 shocks offer adjustable ride height, allowing you to set your Softail from its stock height down to 2 inches lower, giving you flexibility to dial in your preferred look and feel.

Are these shocks difficult to install?

Installation typically involves removing your old shocks and bolting these into place. While straightforward for experienced DIYers, professional installation is always recommended to ensure proper setup and safety. Confirm fitment with Shop by Bike before ordering.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
