422 Shocks
Shocks seem to be s good ride still with a little drop
Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.
Uncork the full potential of your 1989-1999 Harley-Davidson Softail with Progressive 422 Series shocks. These high-pressure gas-charged monotube shocks deliver consistent damping, ensuring a controlled and comfortable ride over varied terrain. Dial in your preferred stance and preload for a truly custom feel.
The Progressive 422 Series shocks are engineered to transform your Softail's handling and comfort. Featuring a robust monotube design, they offer responsive damping that adapts to the road, whether you're cruising solo or loaded down. With easy adjustability for both ride height and spring preload, you can fine-tune your suspension to perfectly match your riding style and load requirements.
Installing the Progressive 422 Series shocks is a straightforward upgrade that makes a significant difference in how your Softail rides. The ability to adjust ride height allows you to achieve that perfect custom stance, while preload adjustments ensure your bike is properly supported, whether you're riding solo or with a passenger. Pair these with a front-end upgrade for a truly balanced suspension system that handles anything the road throws at it.
Can I adjust the ride height after installation?
Yes, these shocks allow you to adjust the ride height from stock down to 2 inches lower. Preload is also user-adjustable without special tools at the adjustment collar.
Should I choose Standard or Heavy Duty valving?
The Heavy Duty version is recommended if you frequently ride two-up, carry heavy luggage, or prefer a firmer ride. Standard valving is suitable for most solo riders and lighter loads.
Are these shocks a direct bolt-on replacement?
Yes, the Progressive 422 Series shocks are designed as a direct replacement for 1989-1999 Harley-Davidson Softail models. Always confirm fitment with our Shop by Bike tool before ordering.

Shocks seem to be s good ride still with a little drop
Seriously these are heavy duty. By heavy duty I mean its like driving a brick down the road. The front and rear adjusted as soft as they go it has gotten a little better but its still very stiff. I would recommend going with the normal suspension unless your riding double and carrying about 300lbs on top of that.
Money well spent.
I'm 210 so i went with the heavy duty.
Firmed up soft tail suspension and now its actually a fun ride.
Easy to install. Perfect ride
I just installed these on my 1995 FLSTC. Everything with the installation went well and the shocks provide a nice ride. I was replacing another set of 422's that had an oil leak on one of the shocks with only a few thousand miles. Hope these last longer.
Very responsive suspension. Easy to adjust. From the factory setting of 1 inch lower than stock you can figure 4/16 of an inch equals 1 inch in adjustment. If you can't afford an adjustable compressor air ride suspension that usually cost 1700-2100$ this is a great compromise. You will need a lift to install this one and you will also need the K&L Multi-Lift Motorcycle Lift Ramp(910-201). That part is a must to get the lift from underneath the bike once it is lowered. I originally lowered the bike 4 inches...to much and it is highly not recommended, 2 3/4 inches is perfect for the softail to still have a good ride quality and have a lowered look and stillmaintain safe ground clearence.
