About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Optimize your 2000-2017 Harley-Davidson Softail for two-up riding or heavy loads with Progressive 422 Series Heavy Duty shocks. These high-pressure gas-charged monotube shocks provide robust, consistent damping. Fine-tune both ride height and spring preload for a perfectly balanced and controlled ride.

Why riders pick this

  • High-pressure gas-charged monotube design
  • Adjustable ride height from stock to 2 inches lower
  • Adjustable spring preload for load and weight
  • Heavy Duty version for two-up or loaded riding
  • Chrome shroud finish

The Progressive 422 Series Heavy Duty shocks are specifically engineered for Softail riders who frequently carry passengers or heavy luggage. Their high-pressure gas-charged monotube design ensures consistent and reliable damping, even under demanding conditions. With adjustable ride height and spring preload, you can easily set up your Softail for optimal comfort and stability, no matter the load.

Built for Demanding Rides

  • High-pressure gas-charged monotube for superior damping under load
  • Adjustable ride height to lower your Softail up to 2 inches
  • Adjustable spring preload for precise load compensation and rider weight
  • Heavy Duty version specifically designed for two-up or loaded riding
  • Finished in brilliant chrome for a custom, polished look

Confidence for Every Journey

Upgrading to the Progressive 422 Series Heavy Duty shocks provides the stability and control you need for long-distance touring or regular two-up riding on your Softail. The robust design and comprehensive adjustability ensure that your bike maintains its composure and comfort, preventing bottoming out and improving overall handling. These shocks are an essential upgrade for any rider who pushes their Softail to its limits with extra weight.

Common questions

Can I adjust the ride height myself?

Yes. These shocks offer 2 inches of adjustable ride height — you can lower or raise your seat with simple wrench adjustment to achieve your desired stance.

Are these adjustable for preload?

Yes. Spring preload is fully adjustable to accommodate different rider weights and two-up or loaded riding, ensuring optimal sag and comfort.

What's the difference between Standard and Heavy Duty shocks?

Heavy Duty shocks feature stiffer springs and valving, making them ideal for riders who frequently carry passengers or heavy gear, providing more support and preventing bottoming out compared to Standard versions.

2003 Fat Boy Improvement Project.

These shocks are beautiful. I am handy but not a professional mechanic and had these installed in just over thirty minutes, and oh my - the ride is amazing. A real improvement to this 2003 Fat Boy.

Would not buy again.

Ordered these shock 6/21/2021 and thought I was getting better-than-stock shocks. I don't ride hard but one of the shocks blew out 3 weeks ago. They didn't even last 2 full years, even the finish peeled off.

Good enough

These really shouldn’t be that expensive. They’re very very good though. Amazing for handling. Ride quality is good for how slammed I have my bike. Every time I raise it up it gets more comfortable. I would recommend these for people who ride hard. and ride twisty roads. It just takes a bit for you to find how you like your preload set. But I can tell you if you want a decently lowered look and still want good enough ride quality this is for you. If you want your bike slammed and to ride like a hard tail this is for you as well just have patients

What a difference!

The ride difference from the progressive shocks versus OEM shocks night and day! Handling of the bike has improved and feels more stable. If you work on your own bike installation, straightforward, Good instructions. Just to let everyone know there is a torque wrench adapter socket that snap-on sells That allows you to torque your bolts properly. You can buy this online For about $80.00. You will also need a torque calculator to get the right torque.
