About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Progressive 990 Sport Series shocks for Harley-Davidson feature a high-pressure monotube design with deflective disc damping. This advanced setup provides complete adjustability via accessible knobs and hand-threaded controls, ensuring consistent damping through the stroke.

Why riders pick this

Common questions

Can I adjust these shocks without special tools?

Yes, the Progressive 990 Sport Series shocks feature external knobs and hand-threaded controls for high and low-speed compression, rebound damping, and spring preload, allowing for tool-free adjustments.

What is the benefit of adjustable compression and rebound damping?

Adjustable compression allows you to control how quickly the shock compresses, while adjustable rebound controls how quickly it extends. This lets you fine-tune the shock's response to bumps and improve overall handling and stability.

Will these shocks fit my specific Harley-Davidson model?

These shocks are designed for Harley-Davidson models. It is crucial to verify your specific year and model using our Shop by Bike tool or by consulting Progressive's fitment guide to ensure correct application before ordering.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
