Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this pack have 10 irons?

The 10-pack is designed for shops, mobile tire technicians, and riders who want backups. Extras prevent lost or damaged irons between tire jobs.

What's the difference between the curved and straight ends?

The curved end hooks under the tire bead for initial lift; the straight end provides leverage for bead separation and tire removal.

Will these scratch my wheels?

The zinc-plated finish and forged steel design are engineered to reduce rim marring compared with unplated irons. Use care on bare aluminum to avoid edge damage.

Can I use these on car tires?

These are sized and designed for motorcycle tires. Car tire beads are thicker and may require different tools.

Changed my own tubeless tire.

After looking at some portable bead popping devices, I decided to try this one out, since I read that this would work on big-adventure-bike wheels. I was worried because one of the tires I need to change is on a R1150GSA, which has a 1 inch or so lip that the bead rests on.

The units are light weight but have a good feel to them. They feel like what you would expect from a tool of this price. They take up more room than the tire irons I used to carry, but they are about the same weight. Easy choice for my kit.

In order to test this out, I changed a tire using just these tools (and a brush to clean up the rim). I was able to do this without much fuss. On the aggressive GS rear rim, I did have to use the tool in 4-5 spots on each side of the rim to finally break the bead. I placed the tool so it would be between two spokes each time. The tool pushed the tire down to the end of the 1" lip, which has a little ridge to further keep the tire in place. Once I got the whole bead down to the ridge it took just a little bit more push to get the bead into the dip. Removing the tire took 20 minutes at a careful pace. If your concern is that this tool won't be able to break your heavy duty bead, it will.

Further, I completed the tire change with just those 2 tire irons. Contrary to some reviews, the irons gave me plenty enough mechanical advantage to remove and mount the tires. You just have to make sure the bead on the other side stays in the dip of the rim.

Just like any other hand tire tool, be careful and don't apply too much force to your rims. If any step of the tire change is difficult, you may be doing it incorrectly.

Don't forget the rim protectors!

...and the lube. I'm going to have to replace some wheel stripes on my bike because I did forget the rim protectors and forgot to lube the first tire while trying to work it off. Despite what I expected from seeing this in use on youtube, I wasn't able to get the bead to break on the first try. I had to work the bead most of the way around the tire before it finally let go. I don't think lube would have helped. Maybe not an issue for really narrow tires, but it took so real work on the 120/70ZR17s I was dealing with. The 180/55ZR17 rear was less painful, but still not a single 'insert and pop the bead' process. If you can wait and spend the money on a proper tire stand and no-mar set of spoons, I'd recommend you go that route. If you can't wait or can't afford those, these will get the job done.

Best thing since sliced bread!

These ingenious little tools are indispensible for breaking the bead quickly and easily. So much better than trying to use the kickstand or pound on the bead hoping not to hit the rim. Also double as tire irons, light weight and easy to stow. Wish I had invented them.

Works great

Excellent product. Bead breaker works like a charm, just don't put your face anywhere near it. I stupidly gave myself a black eye so save yourself and maybe wear some eye protection?

Use as designed and take your time to prevent rim/tire/tube damage.

Quality hard grade steel construction is made to last and perform the specified task very well.
Hard steel may scratch rims without a rim guard. 16 inch length may cause motorcycle/scooter tool box/tube storage constraints. Thin edges of bead breaker ends may wear thru fabric.

Use note: The bead breaker ends of the tool are specifically made thin like a flat bladed screw driver to ease insertion between rim and tire bead, and should only be used to break the bead. Do not insert the bead breaker ends into the tire to remove or install the tire from the rim. Once the bead is broken, use the spoon side of the tool set for final removal and installation. Take your time to prevent damage to your rims/tires/tubes. Without a rim guard, this tool will scratch the inner lip of the rims due to the hardness of the steel. Again, take your time to minimize this damage, and only use the bead breaker end for its intent.
Storage note: The 16 inch length may cause a storage space problem for some tool box/tube solutions that mount to motorcycles/scooters. And as noted earlier the bead breaker edges are thin, and can cut/wear thru fabric bags. Suggest a few layers of masking tape over the ends during storage.
