About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Progressive 412 Series shocks deliver consistent suspension performance for Harley-Davidson motorcycles with a time-tested design that improves ride quality for light to heavy riders. Double-wall steel construction and nitrogen-charged, multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving provide smooth damping across the suspension stroke, while a five-position preload adjuster lets you tune for your weight and riding style.

Why riders pick this

  • Consistent suspension performance
  • Time-tested design improves ride quality
  • Double-wall steel construction for durability
  • Nitrogen-charged, multi-stage valving
  • Five-position preload adjuster for tuning

For Harley-Davidson owners seeking a significant upgrade in ride quality and control, the Progressive 412 Series shocks offer a robust solution. These shocks are engineered to provide superior damping compared to factory units, smoothing out bumps and improving stability. Whether you're navigating city streets or cruising on the highway, the 412 Series enhances your connection to the road.

Core Benefits for Harley Riders

  • Durable double-wall steel damper body construction
  • High-pressure nitrogen charging for consistent, fade-free performance
  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive damping reacts to varying road conditions
  • Five-position cam-style preload adjuster for easy rider weight tuning
  • Available with standard or heavy-duty progressive rate springs

Optimized for Your Riding Style

The versatility of the Progressive 412 Series shocks lies in their adjustability. The straightforward five-position preload adjuster allows you to quickly set your sag and adjust the ride feel for different loads or preferences. This means a more personalized and comfortable experience, ensuring your Harley-Davidson performs optimally whether you're solo, two-up, or fully loaded for a long haul.

Common questions

Will these shocks improve handling on my Harley-Davidson?

Yes, the advanced damping and adjustability of the Progressive 412 Series shocks are designed to provide better control and stability, leading to improved handling over stock suspension.

Are these shocks difficult to install?

Installation is generally straightforward for those with basic mechanical skills. However, we always recommend consulting your motorcycle's service manual or having a professional perform the installation.

What is the benefit of nitrogen charging?

Nitrogen charging helps prevent cavitation and foaming of the shock oil, which maintains consistent damping performance even under continuous use and varying temperatures.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
