About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Upgrade your Harley-Davidson's ride with the Progressive 412 Series shocks, engineered for reliable suspension performance. These shocks feature a robust double-wall steel body and nitrogen-charged damping for consistent control. The five-position preload adjustment allows you to fine-tune your ride for any load.

Why riders pick this

  • Reliable suspension performance for Harley-Davidson
  • Nitrogen-charged, multi-stage velocity-sensitive damping
  • Five-position cam-style preload adjustment
  • Durable double-wall steel body
  • Available in progressive or standard spring rates

The Progressive 412 Series shocks are designed to offer a significant improvement over factory units, providing a more controlled and comfortable ride on your Harley-Davidson. With nitrogen-charged, multi-stage velocity-sensitive damping, these shocks react quickly to road imperfections, keeping your tire firmly planted. This translates to better handling, especially when pushing your V-twin through corners or encountering rough pavement.

Engineered for Performance and Value

  • Double-wall steel construction for enhanced durability
  • Nitrogen-charged with multi-stage velocity-sensitive damping
  • Five-position cam-style preload adjuster for rider-specific tuning
  • Available with progressive or standard rate spring options
  • Designed for reliable performance on Harley-Davidson cruisers

Ride with Confidence

Whether you're looking to smooth out your daily commute or improve the handling for spirited rides, the Progressive 412 Series shocks deliver. The easy-to-use preload adjuster means you can quickly adapt your suspension to suit solo rides, two-up cruising, or loaded touring. Experience the difference a properly tuned suspension makes on your Harley-Davidson, giving you more confidence and comfort on every mile.

Common questions

Can I adjust the preload myself on these shocks?

Yes, the 5-position cam-style preload adjuster allows you to easily dial in the stiffness without tools. Simply rotate the cam to match your weight, passenger, and riding style for optimal comfort and control.

What is the benefit of nitrogen-charged damping?

Nitrogen charging helps maintain consistent damping performance by preventing cavitation and foaming of the shock oil, especially during extended use or aggressive riding. This ensures your shocks perform reliably under all conditions.

Are these shocks a direct bolt-on replacement for my Harley-Davidson?

Progressive 412 Series shocks are designed for direct fitment on many Harley-Davidson models. However, shock mounting points vary across platform generations, so confirm your specific model and year using our Shop by Bike tool to ensure correct application.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
