About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

The Progressive 412 Series shocks are built to deliver smooth, consistent damping for your Harley-Davidson. Constructed with durable double-wall steel and featuring nitrogen-charged, multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving, these shocks provide a significant upgrade in ride quality. The easy-to-use five-position preload adjuster allows you to fine-tune your suspension for your specific weight and riding style.

Why riders pick this

  • Smooth, consistent damping performance
  • Durable double-wall steel construction
  • Nitrogen-charged for fade-free operation
  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving
  • Five-position preload adjuster for fine-tuning
  • Available in progressive or heavy-duty spring rates

Upgrade your Harley-Davidson's handling and comfort with the Progressive 412 Series shocks. Engineered for V-twin performance, these shocks provide reliable, consistent damping across various road conditions. The robust construction and advanced internal components work together to absorb bumps and maintain tire contact, giving you more confidence in every turn.

  • High-pressure nitrogen charge maintains consistent damping
  • Multi-stage velocity-sensitive damping for responsive handling

Common questions

What's the difference between standard and heavy-duty springs?

Standard springs are typically suited for average-weight riders, while heavy-duty springs are designed for heavier riders or those who frequently carry a passenger or substantial luggage, providing more support and resistance to bottoming out. Consult our Shop by Bike tool for specific recommendations.

Will these shocks change the ride height of my Harley?

The ride height can be influenced by the shock length and preload setting. While these shocks are designed as direct replacements, adjusting the 5-position preload can alter the loaded ride height to suit your preference and weight.

Are these shocks available in different finishes?

Yes, these shocks are available in both chrome and black finishes, allowing you to match your bike's aesthetic. Optional show chrome covers are also available on select models for an added custom touch.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
