About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Progressive 412 Series shocks deliver consistent damping and adjustability for Harley-Davidson riders seeking durable suspension without premium pricing. These shocks are engineered to provide a smoother, more controlled ride across various road conditions.

Why riders pick this

  • Consistent damping with nitrogen-charged valving
  • Durable double-wall steel construction
  • Easy 5-position cam-style preload adjustment
  • Choose from Progressive or Heavy-Duty spring rates

The Progressive 412 Series shocks are a solid upgrade for any Harley-Davidson, offering a noticeable improvement over factory suspension. Built with robust double-wall steel construction and nitrogen-charged, multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving, these shocks ensure a consistent feel whether you're cruising solo or loaded down for a long haul. The ability to fine-tune your ride makes them a versatile choice for a wide range of riders and riding styles.

Dial In Your Ride

  • Nitrogen-charged, multi-stage velocity-sensitive valving for consistent damping
  • Durable double-wall steel construction built to last
  • Adjustable 5-position cam-style preload for different loads and styles
  • Available with Progressive or Heavy-Duty spring rates for tailored support

Built for the Road Ahead

Installing the Progressive 412 Series shocks means stepping up your bike's handling and comfort. The straightforward design makes them an accessible upgrade for most riders looking to enhance their V-twin's performance without extensive modifications. Pair them with a fork upgrade for a complete front-to-back suspension overhaul that transforms your Harley's ride dynamics.

Common questions

Can I adjust these shocks for different rider weights?

Yes – the 5-position cam-style preload adjuster lets you dial in stiffness whether you're riding light or heavy. No tools are needed for adjustment.

Are these shocks a direct bolt-on replacement?

Progressive 412 Series shocks are designed as direct replacements for many Harley-Davidson models. Confirm fitment with our Shop by Bike tool before ordering to ensure correct application.

Will installing these shocks change my bike's ride height?

These shocks are designed to maintain a similar ride height to your stock setup, while offering improved damping and adjustability. Specific ride height changes depend on your model and chosen shock length.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
