About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Progressive 412 Series shocks deliver reliable suspension performance with a durable double-wall steel body and nitrogen-charged, velocity-sensitive damping. The five-position preload adjuster lets you tune ride height and stiffness for your weight and riding style.

Why riders pick this

  • Reliable and consistent suspension performance
  • Nitrogen charged for fade-free damping
  • Durable double-wall steel body
  • Quick 5-position cam-style preload adjustment
  • Standard or heavy-duty spring options available

Upgrade your Harley-Davidson's ride with the dependable performance of Progressive 412 Series shocks. These units feature a robust double-wall steel construction and high-pressure nitrogen gas charging for consistent, fade-free damping. The velocity-sensitive valving adapts to changing road conditions, providing improved control and comfort whether you're cruising the boulevard or tackling twisty roads on your V-twin.

Dial In Your Setup

The 412 Series shocks are designed for riders who want straightforward adjustability. The five-position preload adjuster allows you to quickly fine-tune the stiffness and ride height to suit your specific load or riding preference, ensuring optimal performance for solo rides, two-up adventures, or fully loaded touring. The classic chrome finish adds a timeless look to any Harley-Davidson, making these shocks a smart choice for both performance and style.

Common questions

Can I adjust the ride height or stiffness?

Yes, the 5-position cam-style preload adjuster lets you dial in the stiffness for different loads and riding styles, which can also subtly affect ride height.

How do I choose between standard and heavy-duty springs?

Standard springs are typically suitable for average-weight riders and light loads, while heavy-duty springs are recommended for heavier riders, frequent two-up riding, or fully loaded touring. Please confirm your specific needs with our Shop by Bike feature.

Are these shocks compatible with saddlebags or other accessories?

These shocks are designed to work with factory and many aftermarket accessories. However, always verify your specific year and model before ordering, as shock applications vary by chassis and rear suspension type, and may require confirmation with your accessory setup.

Stiff

The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
