Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.
Progressive 444 Series shocks for Harley-Davidson feature Frequency Sensing Technology (FST) that dynamically adjusts damping in real-time. This advanced system effectively soaks up both small and large bumps, delivering a consistently smooth ride.
Why riders pick this
Real-time damping adjustment with FST
Progressive-rate spring for smooth compliance
Hand-adjustable preload, no tools required
Deflective disc valving for precise damping
Available in standard or heavy-duty spring rates
Engineered for optimal performance, these 444 Series shocks combine FST with a progressive-rate spring and hand-adjustable preload. The result is a highly tunable suspension setup that provides superior comfort and control without requiring any special tools for adjustment.
Dynamic Damping for Enhanced Control
Frequency Sensing Technology (FST) for automatic damping adjustment
Progressive-rate spring ensures smooth compliance over varied terrain
Proudly made in the USA, the Progressive 444 Series shocks are designed to meet the demands of serious V-twin riders. The ability to adjust preload by hand means you can quickly adapt your suspension for different riding conditions, whether you're tackling twisty roads or cruising the open highway. Choose between standard or heavy-duty spring rates to best suit your riding style and typical load.

Common questions
How does FST improve the ride?
Frequency Sensing Technology (FST) in the 444 Series shocks automatically senses the frequency of bumps and adjusts damping in real-time, providing a smoother, more controlled ride across all road surfaces.
Can I install these shocks myself?
Many riders with basic mechanical skills can install these shocks. However, proper installation is crucial for safety and performance. If you're unsure, professional installation is recommended. Always confirm fitment for your specific model before starting.
What is the benefit of a progressive-rate spring?
A progressive-rate spring provides a softer initial feel for small bumps and becomes firmer as it compresses, offering better control and bottoming resistance for larger impacts. This results in a more comfortable and capable ride.

Stiff
The shocks seem super nice, but they are incredibly stiff. Turns out they’re 130/200 top to bottom. Would be nice to have an option to choose your spring rate. Couldn’t find it in the description either. Have them installed on a 1998 sportster 1200 by the way. I’m about 180lbs and they don’t move at all, my friend who weighs about 260 also said they were way to firm. Hope this helps.
