About Progressive

Progressive Suspension has focused exclusively on American V-twin suspension since 1982, and its Monotube fork cartridges and 400/970/970G shock series are among the most common upgrades on baggers and Softails. For most riders the stock rear shock is the single worst part on the bike — this is the fix.

Progressive 444 Series shocks for Harley-Davidson motorcycles feature proprietary Frequency Sensing Technology (FST) that dynamically adjusts damping based on bump size. This ensures a consistently comfortable ride, smoothing out both small road imperfections and larger impacts. Riders can fine-tune their suspension with hand-adjustable preload, achieving a personalized feel without the need for special tools.

Why riders pick this

 • FST automatically adjusts damping to road conditions
 • Hand-adjustable spring preload for tool-free tuning
 • Deflective disc valving for progressive damping control
 • Available in standard or heavy-duty spring rates
 • Choose from black or chrome finish options

Elevate the ride quality of your Harley-Davidson with the Progressive 444 Series shocks. These advanced shocks are engineered to provide a superior riding experience by automatically adapting to varying road conditions. The innovative Frequency Sensing Technology (FST) allows the shocks to dynamically adjust damping, delivering optimal comfort and control whether you're navigating city streets or open highways. Experience reduced fatigue and enhanced stability on every journey.

Dynamically Adapts to Road Conditions

 • Frequency Sensing Technology (FST) automatically adjusts damping for optimal bump absorption
 • Deflective disc valving provides progressive damping control throughout the stroke
 • Hand-adjustable spring preload allows for easy, tool-free tuning to suit your load and style
 • Available in both standard and heavy-duty spring rates for tailored support
 • Choose between classic black or brilliant chrome finish options

Engineered for Performance and Comfort

The 444 Series shocks are a direct upgrade for many Harley-Davidson models, designed to improve both the look and feel of your V-twin. The combination of FST, deflective disc valving, and progressive-rate springs means these shocks work smarter, not just harder. Whether you're seeking a smoother commute or better handling on twisty roads, these shocks provide the foundation for a truly optimized ride. Confirm fitment with your specific model to ensure the correct spring rate and mounting for your setup.

Common questions

What is the benefit of Frequency Sensing Technology (FST)?

FST allows the shocks to automatically adjust damping based on the size and frequency of bumps, providing a consistently smooth and controlled ride over various road surfaces without manual intervention.

Can I adjust these shocks without special tools?

Yes, the Progressive 444 Series shocks feature hand-adjustable spring preload, allowing you to make adjustments easily without any specialized tools.

How do I choose between standard and heavy-duty spring rates?

The ideal spring rate depends on your typical riding load (solo, two-up, luggage) and riding style. We recommend confirming your specific year and model with Progressive or using our Shop by Bike tool for guidance on the correct spring rate.

I'll never go back to stock

I bought these in 13" and put them on my '09 Street Bob probably about 10k miles ago. ....I should have done this from the start.
I have a sundowner seat. That seat and the shocks make for a very nice, comfortable ride. Yet firm enough to feel planted taking corners...faster than I should.

I since sold the Street Bob and bought the Low Rider S and the 444's were transferred to the new ride. As long as I have a Dyna I will have the 444's.

....if only they made it in 13.5" or 14".

throw away your factory shocks

Put a set of these on my '08 FXDB I weigh 205, no more bottoming out on potholes. No more mushy feeling when you
hit the gas. Far better ride and overall performance than the OEM shocks...

The only reason I am keeping my old shocks is if ever I get another bike these will fit, they are coming with me....

Great shocks

install was pretty easy. Needed a vice to insert the provided bushings. Only issue was the stock bolt cover on my 2016 Street Bob would not fit back over the top of the new shock bolting location.

This product is a big improvement over stock shocks!!!

The riding comfort on my 2014 Super Glide has improved remarkably, as well as the handling. No more bottoming out over bumps and speed humps. My spine also thinks these Progresive shocks are great.

Lee Forsythe

Major improvement in stability and Handling

I had never upgraded from stock before on my other bikes. These shocks are awesome. Right out of the shop I noticed the improved ride. Wife jumped on the back, I dampened the setting, and what a noticeable difference with my DWG in stability and handling.

Go with Standard

I want to echo what a couple people have said in here (I should have listened). I got the Heavy Duty because Progressive said it was for 250 lbs+. I weigh 190 and my girl weighs around 130. That should be around 320 lbs that we're packing together. However, with both of us on, the things barely budge if at all. Naturally, solo is even worse....total spine killer. So I'm swapping them for the standard. I'm guessing they'll take a load up to about 300 lbs.

That being said, they were easy to install (I used a woodworking clamp to squeeze in the bushings that are not preinstalled on the shocks). They look great. Adjusting preload is pretty easy. Need to use a little elbow grease but they adjust easily enough. Overall, solid product.
